People who became ill after eating Diamond Shruumz-brand products reported a variety of severe symptoms including seizures, central nervous system depression (loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness), agitation, abnormal heart rates, hyper/hypotension, nausea, and vomiting.
All Diamond Shruumz-brand products have been recalled and should no longer be available for sale. These products were available online and in person at a variety of retail locations nationwide including smoke/vape shops, and at retailers that sell hemp-derived products such as cannabidiol (CBD) or delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8 THC).

As of October 31, 2024, CDC’s investigation identified a total of 180 illnesses* reported from 34 states; 73 people have been hospitalized, and there are three (3) potentially associated deaths.

Testing for the presence of compounds in Diamond Shruumz-brand products has been completed and the results have been summarized in the Sample Results section below. * The case definition used by state health departments for the reported illnesses is as follows: Illness with moderate or major clinical effects, or death, occurring in a person who ate any Diamond Shruumz product (chocolate bars, cones, gummies or other) or another chocolate product marketed as containing mushrooms, during January 1, 2024, through the present.
As part of their recall announcement, Prophet Premium Blends, LLC indicated that Diamond Shruumz-brand products contain muscimol. To date, FDA has tested 22 samples of Chocolate Bars, 10 Infused Cones, 22 Gummies, and one raw ingredient that was reportedly used in the manufacturing of some Diamond Shruumz-brand products. Nine (9) of the 22 Chocolate Bars, five (5) of the 10 Infused Cones, and the raw ingredient were found to contain muscimol. Muscimol does not appear in all products and cannot explain all the symptoms reported by ill people who consumed the Diamond Shruumz-brand products.
In addition to muscimol, FDA analyses of Diamond Shruumz-brand Chocolate Bar, Infused Cone, and Gummies samples identified the presence of the following compounds:
Results in the table below show different compounds present in different flavors of Chocolate Bars, Infused Cones, and Gummies, but even for the same flavor of the Diamond Shruumz-brand product, there may be variations in what compounds are present.
Although these compounds individually have known effects when ingested, there is less research on the interactions between these compounds when ingested together. FDA and CDC medical officers are interpreting these test results to understand the health risks of ingesting these chemical substances and to determine the appropriate next steps.
Testing for the presence of compounds in Diamond Shruumz-brand products is complete, and the results have been summarized in the table below. Six (6) of the 22 Diamond-Shruumz-brand gummies collected for analysis tested negative for the compounds/chemicals listed in the table below; these six (6) samples have been excluded from the table. Additionally, 10 of the Diamond-Shruumz-brand products that were collected for analysis, which included various flavors of Chocolate Bars, Infused Cones, and Gummies, tested negative for the presence of cannabis-associated cannabinoids.
